Contacts Offer Alternative to Laser Eye Surgery
Colombus, Ohio: Is life a blur? Have you struggled to see clearly? Now you can, without laser surgery.
A Mount Carmel East doctor is one of the first to offer patients permanent contact lenses that go in the eye instead of on it.
Laurel Santino, a Lancaster doctor, is a patient. She's delivered 1,000 babies in her career, but her nearsightedness has meant that she's always had to wear corrective lenses.
"Wearing a mask and a hat and the glasses in surgery, it just doesn't...they just don't mix," says Dr. Santino.
She tried contacts, but she says, "They're so uncomfortable, that for about the past six months, I haven't been able to wear them."
Dr. Richard Erdey of Mount Carmel East will give her implantable contact lenses. They've just been approved by the F.D.A. These contacts can help people who aren't candidates for laser eye surgeries, whose vision is worse and who worry about cutting a permanent prescription onto the eye.
"Lasik is permanent. It's not reversible," says Dr. Erdey.
