Outback Optometrist Shares Vision

When the awards for West Australian of the year were being divvied up, it was the "eyes" that had it for naming Margaret O’Neill a state Regional Hero. Margaret is a travelling optometrist. She is based in Kununurra, but visits up to 40 Aboriginal communities throughout the Kimberley and Pilbara every year.

In her job she clocks up about 30 thousand kilometres a year and at one stage spent more time in the car than at home. Margaret has been an optometrist for 15 years now, five in the Kimberley, and has worked as far a field as Arnhem Land, the Pacific Islands and Perth. She tests the vision of hundreds of people who otherwise don't have access to an optometrist because of their remote location.
